she wiggled her toes in the luke warm sand making her way deeper and deeper into the sand until just about her whole foot was engulfed in sand. the second layer of sand was harder and colder. still wet from the last wave that soaked through the many layers of sand. mallory sat in her two piece bathing suit, trying to absorb all the sun before it melted away into the various colours that made sundown. it was still only around two in the afternoon, but evening came faster in the winter months. and even the sea creatures knew that the night was coming quickly. all the fish stopped jumping in the water and all the crabs left the beach, though there was one little starfish that was still in the sand. it was only a few feet away from mallory and she felt the urge to touch it. she hadn't held a starfish in a long while and she longed for the cute creature to sit in her hand. walking over to the spot between beach and water, mal picked up the starfish and she just stared at the rough textured sea creature. just merveling at it's beauty. i described all the things we could not see, AND WE'LL UNRAVEL THE MYSTERY
The sand crunched under his feet; Jake walked along the beach, staring down at the sand as he walked with his shoes in his right hand. It wasn't in his nature to go to the beach, but he needed some peace and some time to himself just then. The sound of waves crashing against the sand and the salty sea air was oddly soothing - just what he needed. The brunet kicked aside a piece of driftwood; he hadn't been to this beach for seven years, not since she had dumped him.
Despite the sun glaring down on him, Jake shivered slightly at the memories that suddenly and very painfully rushed back to him, a cold chill washing over him. Forget it, Jake, he told himself morosely, losing himself as he walked absently across the beach. That was seven whole years ago. You can move on.
Because he wasn't watching where he was going, someone's leg seemed to come out of nowhere, and Jake tripped with a little exclamation and turned bashfully to the girl who was sunbathing on the beach. "Oh, god, sorry," he muttered. "I wasn't looking - my fault entirely. Sorry." How did one go about apologizing to someone...? Jake had never really grasped this 'social interaction' concept. |

the starfish felt kind of like dried play dough. it was still malleable, but i was crusty and kind of hard. it was a texture that mallory couldn't really translate into a specific feeling. all she knew was that she loved it. with all her heart, she just wanted to keep it as a quirky pet. she could even buy starfish food and get a little salt water tank. it would be perfect. no one would mind. especially since she lives alone in her apartment. the starfish was so mesmerizing that all mal could do was blink and fall on her side when the man walked into her. he hit her hip with his calf, and she rocked to the other side. dropping her starfish in her lap. "no, no. um, its all good. i should probably not be in the middle of the beach like this." she started saying. her voice was quiet, but she was sure he could still hear her. she grabbed her starfish and stood up. walking towards her stuff piled on her towel she should've been lying on. So - that was it, then? Jake had to strain to hear the quiet little words that the girl spoke - she seemed rather timid, and he knew one thing: he wasn't good with timid people. Still, she seemed all right, so Jake managed a smile as she walked away, clutching something in her hand. "It's a lovely starfish," he managed; it was not in his nature to make conversation, but he felt obligated to say something - after all, he had tripped over her leg. Whoops. "I - um, haven't seen one in... a - a few years, I guess. Could I - could I hold it for a bit?" Jake sighed internally; he had been about to delve into the subject of his failed relationship, and that simply would not do. It would just make him feel more uncomfortable than he already was. |

stopping abrubtly at the mans comment, mallory turned around and she blushed until her cheeks were red and her nerves went crazy. she ran her hand through her hair and in the process, she noticed the starfish do nothing. it didn't care that she was now only holding it with one hand, it didn't care that she almost dropped it and it certainly didn't care about what was going on in the human world right now. she bit her lip trying to make words come out. she held her head down and she cleared her throat so she could talk louder and clearer. " be careful, it's easy to hurt them." she transferred the sea creature into the persons hand. she didn't think anyone but the little girls and her even thought about starfish. "whats your name?"MALLORY

Reaching out his hand, Jake took the little starfish as carefully and gently as he possibly could, not having the least intention of hurting it. It felt so very fragile, like he could break it with two of his fingers, and a bit of powder rubbed onto his fingers as he handled it as carefully as he possibly could. The little sea creature brought back fond memories of a time long gone, when he'd used to come here with his parents and his siblings; the feeling was like euphoria and nostalgia mixed into one. It was the sort of thing that gave him a rather tingly feeling, instead of regrets, like he'd expected. The feeling rather took him by surprise, and made Jake's heart jump a little once the sensation soared through it; it seemed to wash over him, filling him with a delicious warmth from head to toe.
It was a rather nice feeling; he looked up at the woman who'd just handed him this creature that served as sort of a link to his past. What was his name? Well, he wasn't accustomed to telling strangers he'd just met his name, but then again, Jake wasn't accustomed to going to the beach and then tripping over someone's leg, either. He supposed he owed her his name, after - er, doing what he'd done. Besides, she seemed rather decent, and Jake wasn't going to say no to a new friend. It wasn't like he had many right now, anyway. He wasn't one for social interaction, not since that painful breakup seven years ago. But, as he reminded himself yet again, Jake was ready to move on, and that meant making new friends and coming out - however hesitantly - from the locked steel walls that he'd hidden himself behind, and thrown away the keys. "Jake," he said. "Jake Harley. And you?" |
